When choosing between a rollator or alternative walking aid, such as a walker, it’s a good idea to understand the benefits, so we’ve put together this mini fact sheet with some great reasons to choose a rollator.
A rollator is a rolling walker or stability aid that offers support to those struggling with mobility. If you’ve ever seen a three or four-leg frame with a wheel on the end of each leg, you have seen a rollator.
The main benefit of a rollator is that it’s easy to move it. Thanks to the pivoted wheels, you can easily go around corners in rooms and even slalom tracks (though we haven’t tested it out as yet!). You can walk with added support at a quicker pace than you would with a standard walker or a walking stick. A key benefit is also the fact that you don’t have to lift it up to move it forwards, so if your upper body strength is leaving something to be desired, then a rollator is a good bet.
Just be aware that the width of the frame can be a problem in tight spaces.
People tend to use walking aids because they need a little more support a little more often than your average walker.
It’s not advisable to use a rollator to support your weight as the wheels can make it dangerous to lean too heavily on the frame.
Traditional static walkers offer great support to those with balance issues and you can rest on them while standing up.
That said, the rollator has one major advantage over a walker for support, and that is it the four-wheel version comes with a seat. So while you can’t rest while standing up, you can use it to rest your wary legs. The brakes will stop it from rolling while you’re stationary on it.
All versions tend to come with an area for a bag or storage pouch so you don’t need to carry your handbag or shopping bag.
It’s fair to say that in the fashion stakes, the rollator beats the static walking frame hands down. Rollators have a more stylish frame and come in different colours and designs so you look as good as the King of Rock and Rollators.

Comfortable grip: Rollators have comfortable ergonomic handles and so are ideal for people who don’t have a strong grip.
Foldable: Some rollators can be folded and packed away, for example, if you need to get a taxi or you’re going somewhere in a car. It’s also useful for saving space in your home.
Lightweight: Certain rollators are extra-lightweight so you can lift them easily if needed.
Rustproof: Look out for this feature if you intend to use your rollator outside. A rustproof frame will last longer, as well as looking more attractive over a longer period.
