Do you know your stairlift statistics?
As we get older, our chances of falling down increase – and it fits that many of these falls will be on stairs where the change of surface level can increase slips and trips. The stairlift statistics are startling.
Studies have shown that an alarming 33% of over 65s will fall at least once a year and this goes up to 50% for those aged 80 and over.
Falling down can hurt when you’re small, be a painful inconvenience during young adulthood, and as you reach your senior years, a tumble can harm your confidence and self-esteem, creating the sense that you’re nowhere near as independent as you once were.
Add in a staircase to the mix and the stakes are higher – losing your balance going either up or down can cause serious injury and even be fatal. In fact, your chance of experiencing a traumatic brain injury increases by three times if you fall down the stairs compared to falling on a level surface.
One reason people express for not wanting a stairlift installed in their home is the idea that they will somehow lose their independence, but in fact, it’s the opposite that’s true. A stairlift can protect you from falling down the stairs, preventing injury and hospitalisation. That way you get to stay on your feet whenever you’re not using the stairs.
Another great reason for getting a stairlift is that you can stay in your beloved family home rather than downsizing into a bungalow – and it’s much cheaper than moving house.
While we’re on the subject of costs, did you know that a stairlift costs less to run off your electricity than your washing machine? You can easily run a stairlift for less than £15 a year.
